Why people look for Sapphire Reserve alternatives

The Reserve’s $795 fee is high, and much of its value comes from credits you have to use: a $300 annual travel credit, up to $500 a year on The Edit hotel bookings ($250 per booking), up to $300 a year in dining credits ($150 per half-year) and up to $120 for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck, per Chase. If you do not travel often or book through Chase Travel, a cheaper card can earn similar points for less. If you want even more perks, the Amex Platinum goes further at a higher price.

1. The Platinum Card from American Express: more premium perks

Per American Express on October 18, 2026, the Platinum Card costs $895 a year and earns 5X points on flights booked directly with airlines or through Amex Travel (on up to $500,000 a year) and on prepaid hotels through Amex Travel. It lists access to 1,550+ airport lounges and a long list of credits with enrollment, including up to $600 a year in hotel credits, $200 in Uber Cash, $200 in airline fee credits, $219 for CLEAR+ and $400 at Resy restaurants. Additional Platinum Cards cost $195 each per Amex’s terms.

It suits travelers who will use several credits each year; otherwise the fee is $100 more than the Reserve. See the Amex Platinum review or our full Amex Platinum vs Chase Sapphire Reserve comparison.

2. Capital One Venture X: lounges for about half the fee

Per Capital One on October 18, 2026, Venture X costs $395 a year and earns 10X miles on hotels and rental cars and 5X on flights and vacation rentals booked through Capital One Travel, plus 2X on everything else. New cardholders can earn 75,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 in 3 months. Capital One lists a $300 annual credit for Capital One Travel bookings, 10,000 bonus miles every account anniversary, and Capital One Lounge and 1,300+ Priority Pass lounge access for primary cardholders.

If you use the travel credit, the effective cost drops sharply. It is the closest like-for-like swap for most Reserve holders. See the Capital One Venture X review.

3. Citi Strata Elite: Citi’s premium option

Per Citi on October 18, 2026, the Strata Elite costs $595 a year ($75 per authorized user) and earns 12x ThankYou points on hotels, car rentals and attractions and 6x on air travel booked on cititravel.com, 6x at restaurants on Citi Nights (Friday and Saturday, 6 pm to 6 am ET) and 1.5x on everything else. New cardholders can earn 75,000 bonus points after $6,000 in 3 months. Credits include up to $300 off a 2+ night hotel stay via Citi Travel, up to $200 in Splurge Credit and up to $200 in Blacklane credits each calendar year, plus Priority Pass and 4 Admirals Club passes a year.

See the Citi Strata Elite review.

4. American Express Gold Card: best for dining and groceries

It lists up to $424 a year in credits with enrollment: $120 in dining credits, $120 in Uber Cash, $100 at Resy and $84 at Dunkin’. Amex’s terms show no foreign transaction fees. Lounge access is not among the benefits Amex lists.

It is the better fit if most of your spending is food rather than flights. See the Amex Gold review or Amex Gold vs Chase Sapphire Reserve.

5. Citi Strata Premier: best low-fee transferable points

Per Citi on October 18, 2026, the Strata Premier costs $95 a year with no authorized-user fee and earns 10x points on hotels, car rentals and attractions booked on cititravel.com, plus 3x on air travel and other hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, and gas and EV charging. New cardholders can earn 60,000 bonus points after $4,000 in 3 months. Citi lists a $100 annual hotel benefit on a single $500+ stay booked through Citi Travel. The variable APR is 19.74% to 27.74%.

New cardholders can earn 60,000 bonus points after $4,000 in 3 months, and there is a $50 annual statement credit with a $50+ airline purchase. Wells Fargo’s card page did not show the APR range when we checked, so we do not publish one; see the pricing terms before you apply.

How much does the annual fee difference matter?

Switch from the Reserve toAnnual feeFee change per year (our subtraction)
Amex Platinum$895+$100
Citi Strata Elite$595-$200
Capital One Venture X$395-$400
Amex Gold$325-$470
Citi Strata Premier$95-$700
Wells Fargo Autograph Journey$95-$700

Fees are only half the story. If you would use the Reserve’s $300 travel credit and dining credits in full, its net cost is far lower than $795. If you would not, a lower-fee card is usually the better deal. For a wider list, see our best travel credit cards.

Before you switch

  1. Use or move your points first. Ask Chase what happens to your points before you close the card, and redeem or transfer them if they would be lost.
  2. Ask about a product change. Chase may let you move to a card with a lower fee without a new application.
  3. Mind your credit. Closing a card can raise your credit utilization and shorten your average account age.
  4. Check the timing of the annual fee. Ask the issuer how a recently billed annual fee is handled if you close or change the card.

Methodology and sources

We loaded each issuer’s own card page on October 18, 2026: Chase and its pricing and terms, American Express Platinum and Gold with their rates and fees terms, Capital One Venture X, Citi Strata Elite, Citi Strata Premier and Wells Fargo Autograph Journey. We recorded fees, APRs, earn rates, bonuses and credits only where the issuer showed them. Where an issuer showed a personalized welcome offer (Amex Platinum and Gold), we do not publish a fixed figure. The issuing banks were confirmed active in FDIC BankFind the same day. We do not use aggregator roundups for any figure on this page.
