Student Loan Debt Statistics 2026: 18 Facts From FSA and the New York Fed
U.S. student loan debt hit about $1.72 trillion in FSA's FY2026 Q3 portfolio and $1.65 trillion on credit reports in NY Fed 2026:Q2, with 42.3 million FSA recipients and a 10.6% serious delinquency rate.
U.S. federal student loan debt stood near $1.72 trillion in Federal Student Aid’s latest portfolio summary, while the New York Fed counted $1.65 trillion of student loan balances on credit reports in mid-2026. Those two official sources do not always match dollar-for-dollar, but together they are the cleanest public read on how large the market is, who holds it, and how repayment stress is evolving. Here are 18 statistics from those primary sources.
Data as of October 16, 2026. Federal portfolio dollars and recipient counts come from Federal Student Aid’s Portfolio Summary and Portfolio by Loan Type Excel files (NSLDS; file Last-Modified October 8, 2026 on studentaid.gov) plus the Direct Loan Portfolio by Loan Status workbook and FSA’s FY 2024 Annual Report. Credit-report balances and delinquency come from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s Quarterly Report on Household Debt and Credit for 2026:Q2 and its August 11, 2026 release. Federal fiscal year quarters end December 31 (Q1), March 31 (Q2), June 30 (Q3) and September 30 (Q4). Where we divide published figures, we say so. How large is the federal portfolio?
1. Federal student loans totaled about $1.72 trillion in FY2026 Q3
Federal Student Aid’s Portfolio Summary lists $1,724.5 billion in dollars outstanding for Direct, FFEL and Perkins loans combined as of federal FY2026 Q3 (ended June 30, 2026). That is the headline federal book.
2. About 42.3 million people benefit from those loans
The same FSA table lists 42.3 million unduplicated recipients. FSA defines a recipient as the student who benefits from the loan.
3. Direct Loans are about $1.56 trillion of that total
Direct Loans were $1,564.8 billion with 38.3 million recipients in FY2026 Q3. That is roughly 91% of FSA’s total dollars (our division of 1,564.8 / 1,724.5).
4. FFEL is still about $157 billion
Even though new FFEL loans stopped in 2010, FSA still reports $157.0 billion outstanding and 6.4 million FFEL recipients in FY2026 Q3.
5. Perkins is a small residual book
Perkins loans were about $2.7 billion with 0.8 million recipients in FY2026 Q3. The program no longer originates new loans.
What the New York Fed sees on credit reports
6. Credit-report student debt was $1.65 trillion in Q2 2026
The New York Fed’s Household Debt and Credit Report put student loan balances at $1.651 trillion as of 2026:Q2, down $7 billion from Q1 and up $13 billion from a year earlier.
7. Student loans are nearly 9% of household debt
Total household debt was $18.771 trillion in 2026:Q2. Student loans were about 8.8% of that total (our division of 1.651 / 18.771).
8. Serious delinquency rose to 10.6% of balances
The share of student loan balances 90 or more days past due rose to 10.6% in 2026:Q2 from 10.3% in 2026:Q1, per the New York Fed report PDF.
9. New flows into serious delinquency slowed versus a year ago
The New York Fed’s annualized flow into serious delinquency for student loans was 7.83% in Q2 2026, down from 12.88% in Q2 2025. Stock delinquency can rise even while new transitions cool, especially when previously paused loans reappear as past due.
10. FSA and NY Fed totals are not the same number
FSA’s $1.72 trillion federal book and the NY Fed’s $1.65 trillion credit-report balance answer different questions. Use FSA for the Department of Education’s portfolio and the NY Fed for what shows up on consumer credit files.
What kinds of federal loans people hold
11. Unsubsidized Stafford is the largest Stafford bucket
In FSA’s Portfolio by Loan Type for FY2026 Q3, Stafford Unsubsidized balances were about $642.9 billion (30.9 million recipients), versus Stafford Subsidized $299.7 billion (29.9 million recipients). Combined Stafford was about $942.5 billion with 34.8 million unique Stafford recipients.
12. Consolidation loans exceed $500 billion

Repayment status and defaults
14. About $639 billion of Direct Loans are in repayment
FSA’s Direct Loan status snapshot for FY2026 Q3 lists about $638.7 billion in repayment (17.0 million recipients).
15. Forbearance is nearly $450 billion
Direct Loan forbearance was about $449.7 billion (8.0 million recipients) in the same snapshot. FSA notes that during FY24 Q4, borrowers in the SAVE plan were moved into forbearance because of an injunction, which still shapes status totals.
16. Cumulative Direct Loan defaults are about $188 billion
Cumulative balances in default were about $187.8 billion with 7.55 million recipients in FY2026 Q3. FSA points readers to its separate New Direct Loan Default report for the flow of new defaults.
17. In-school and grace balances are smaller than repayment
In-school Direct Loan balances were about $96.7 billion (5.2 million recipients) and grace about $36.0 billion (1.5 million recipients) in FY2026 Q3.
Longer-run context from FSA’s annual report

How to put these numbers to work
- Treat FSA as the official federal portfolio and the New York Fed as the credit-report view. Do not mix them into one fake “true” total.
- If you hold federal loans, start at StudentAid.gov for balances, servicer contacts and repayment plan options.
- Building a credit file while in school can help later applications. Compare best student credit cards we verified on issuer pages, or best secured credit cards if you need a deposit-backed path.
- For broader credit stress context, see credit score statistics 2026 and average credit card debt.
- For rates and delinquency on other installment debt, see personal loan statistics 2026.
- None of these figures is a recommendation to borrow more or to choose a specific repayment plan.
