Credits can narrow the fee gap only if you would have spent that money anyway, at those merchants, on Amex’s schedule. Carrying a balance on either card would add interest costs that can quickly outweigh rewards. We leave Pay Over Time APRs out of this table because we did not load a complete rates-and-fees PDF for both cards today.

Which card has better lounge access and travel protections?

Platinum includes the Global Lounge Collection. Amex says it covers over 1,550 airport lounges as of January 2026, including Centurion Lounges, 10 Delta Sky Club visits when flying on an eligible Delta flight, Priority Pass after enrollment, and other select partner lounges. Amex states that the Gold Card does not currently have lounge access benefits.

Both cards advertise travel and purchase protections such as trip delay coverage, baggage insurance, car rental loss and damage insurance, purchase protection and extended warranty, with different dollar caps and conditions on each card page. Read the full benefit terms on American Express before you rely on any protection. Gold’s trip delay benefit on the page we checked reimburses certain expenses after a delay of more than 12 hours, up to $300 per trip (max two claims per 12 months). Platinum’s trip delay benefit uses a more than 6 hour trigger and up to $500 per trip under the terms shown.

Amex Gold vs Amex Platinum: who might prefer which?

Gold tends to fit if most of your flexible spend is restaurants and U.S. groceries, you will use the dining and Uber credits, and you do not need airport lounges. At $325, the fee is easier to offset with everyday categories.

Platinum tends to fit if you book flights and prepaid Amex Travel hotels often enough to use 5X and the hotel credit, you will use lounge access, and you already spend in the credit categories Amex lists. At $895, unused credits make the card expensive quickly.

Gold earns 4X Membership Rewards points at restaurants worldwide on up to $50,000 a year, per Amex on October 4, 2026. Platinum earns 1X on dining but offers up to $400 a year in Resy statement credits with enrollment. Heavy restaurant spend usually favors Gold's earn rate.

Do both cards have no foreign transaction fees?

American Express states that the Platinum Card has no foreign transaction fees. The Gold Card marketing page we fetched on October 4, 2026 did not highlight a foreign-fee line in the same FAQ block, so confirm Gold's pricing terms on Amex before you travel. Other costs can still apply.

Whether that stack makes sense depends on whether you use Gold's dining earn and Platinum's travel credits in the same year. This is not financial advice.
