Amex Platinum Annual Fee 2026: Is the $895 Fee Worth It?

The Platinum Card from American Express charges $895 a year as of October 16, 2026. We walk through issuer-stated credits and 5X earn rates from Amex's own page so you can decide if the fee clears for your spending.

The Platinum Card® from American Express costs $895 a year. That is the Basic Card annual fee American Express listed on its own Platinum page on October 16, 2026. Whether the fee is “worth it” is not a slogan. It is a math problem: do the issuer-stated credits and 5X categories you will actually use clear $895 after you ignore perks you would never buy?

Fees and credits as of October 16, 2026. We loaded American Express’s Platinum Card page on October 16, 2026 and recorded the annual fee, Additional Card fee, Membership Rewards earn rates and the statement-credit caps Amex published there. We do not invent credits Amex did not list, and we do not treat our own compare pages as evidence. Card terms can change; confirm everything on americanexpress.com before you apply. American Express also markets no Preset Spending Limit on Platinum, meaning the spending limit is flexible rather than a single published ceiling (Amex may still assign a limit in some cases and will notify you). That is a product feature, not a reason the $895 fee is free.

Issuer-stated statement credits (caps)

These are the headline annual credit caps Amex showed on October 16, 2026. Enrollment, eligible merchants, auto-renewals and exclusions apply. Count a credit only if you would buy that thing without the card.

Paper math versus realistic math

If you added every headline cap in the table above (treating Global Entry as $30 per year when amortized over four years, and ignoring TSA if you take Global Entry), the sum is well above $895. That paper total is misleading for most households:

  1. Hotel credit only helps if you book prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection through Amex Travel.
  2. Resy, lululemon, Equinox and Oura only help if those brands are already in your budget.
  3. Digital entertainment and Walmart+ / Uber One only help if you keep those subscriptions anyway.
  4. Airline fee credit only helps if you pay incidental fees on your selected airline.

A cleaner test: list the credits you already spend on, sum those caps, add any lounge or 5X value you can estimate conservatively, and compare to $895. If the “already spend” total is under the fee, Platinum is a luxury upgrade, not a break-even tool.

Earn rates: where 5X actually applies

Purchase typeMembership Rewards rate (Amex, Oct 16, 2026)

Everyday dining, groceries and gas are 1X unless a separate credit (such as Resy) applies. That is why Platinum is usually a travel and lifestyle-credit card, not a grocery earner. Worked examples (illustrative)

These examples use only Amex’s stated caps and earn rates. They are not predictions of your statement.

Example A: Frequent flyer who already buys the easy credits

Assume you already pay for:

  • Prepaid FHR / Hotel Collection stays that clear the $600 hotel credit
  • Uber rides/orders that clear $200 Uber Cash
  • One airline’s bag/change fees that clear $200
  • Streaming / news that clears $300 digital entertainment
  • CLEAR+ at $219

Stated credits in that stack: $600 + $200 + $200 + $300 + $219 = $1,519 before points or lounges. Against an $895 fee, the credit stack alone is positive if you would have bought all five without the card. Add 5X on flights you already take, and the case strengthens. Skip two of those credits and the margin shrinks fast.

Example B: Occasional traveler who mainly wants lounges

Assume you use $200 airline fees, $200 Uber Cash, and almost none of the hotel, Resy, lululemon or Equinox credits. Stated credits: about $400. That leaves roughly $495 of the fee to be justified by lounge access, trip protections and 5X on a modest flight budget. That can still make sense for some travelers, but it is not automatic.

Example C: Student or thin-file cardholder

Platinum is not a student or starter product. If you are building credit first, see best student credit cards or best secured credit cards. Pay $0 annual fees until your spending and travel pattern can clear $895 honestly.

Other Platinum benefits Amex highlights (harder to price)

Amex also markets Global Lounge Collection access (Centurion Lounges, Delta Sky Club visits when flying eligible Delta flights, Priority Pass after enrollment, and other partner lounges), Fine Hotels + Resorts property benefits on qualifying stays, Hilton Honors Gold and Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite enrollment paths, car rental privileges, trip delay / cancellation insurance terms, purchase and cell-phone protections, and no foreign transaction fees. Those matter for some cardholders and barely matter for others. We do not assign a dollar value Amex did not publish as a statement credit.

Who the $895 fee is for

More likely to clear the fee

  • You already book prepaid FHR / Hotel Collection stays through Amex Travel
  • You already use Uber, CLEAR, and the digital entertainment partners enough to hit those caps
  • You buy flights direct or via Amex Travel at a scale where 5X matters
  • You will use airport lounges often enough that access is part of the trip budget

Less likely to clear the fee

  • You rarely stay at FHR / Hotel Collection properties
  • You would only buy Resy / lululemon / Equinox / Oura because a credit exists
  • Most of your spend is dining and groceries (1X on Platinum)
  • You want a lower fee and stronger everyday earn rates instead

How to decide in five minutes

  1. Open Amex’s Platinum page and copy the credits you already pay for.
  2. Sum those caps. Be honest about enrollment and caps.
  3. Estimate 5X on flights you will book direct or via Amex Travel (points value is personal; use a conservative cents-per-point figure you actually redeem).
  4. Compare the total to $895.
  5. If the total is below the fee, Platinum is discretionary. If it is above, still confirm the live offer and terms Amex shows you.

Card APR, late fees and Pay Over Time terms can apply if you carry a balance. We did not see a single fixed purchase APR on the public marketing page we loaded, so we do not invent one. Paying the balance in full keeps interest out of the fee math.
